ABEX Supports Reopening of Canada House in London

Jim & Alix Canada HouseJim McGregor and his wife Alix were honoured to attend the reopening of Canada House in London by the Queen who was accompanied by her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.  Canada House was officially reopen on February 19 after a $225-million renovation.

Canada House was first opened by the Queen’s grandfather George V in 1925.

As the official party entered the building they heard clapping and cheering echoing from across nearby Trafalgar Square where hundreds of Canadian expats and tourists had gathered.

The Queen was particularly interested in an atrium named in her honour, as well as a gallery showcasing art of Canadian artists Emily Carr and Gordon Smith.

Jim and Alix McGregor are shown below proudly standing next to the piece of art they donated to Canada House.  They are also among the people on the stairs shown in Hello Magazine’s picture below, in the bottom right corner.

ABEX Helps Build a House for a Nicaraguan Family

Nicaragua 3

Sponsored Family

ABEX is proud that we were able to help a family in Nicaragua achieve their dream of having a safe and solid home. The house ABEX sponsored was a part of Bridges to Community Canada’s initiative to build houses for impoverished families in Nicaragua.

Bridges to Community Canada is a nonprofit organization that has built 115 homes over the past five years in the rural farming community of El Sasle (population 1,175).  El Salse is located in the northern coffee-growing region of Jinotega. Nearly 60% of Jinotega’s residents live in extreme poverty and their homes are usually cobbled together with scrap materials. They are often overcrowded, and lack running water and appropriate sanitation facilities. For most people a safe and solid home is only a dream.

Bridges to Community’s Housing Program seeks to make this dream come true. What a difference a safe and solid house can make! Bridges builds sturdy cinderblock homes that are earthquake resistant and are designed to withstand years of heavy winds and rain. Bridges works to secure land titles for the owners so that families have a place to call their own for generations. The new homes become a place of pride where the owners can host their friends, families, and neighbors.

To build a house that is safe, dry, and secures costs just $4,000! ABEX is excited that it was able to sponsor a house for a family and make their everyday struggle a little easier.

Bridges plans to construct 20 new houses in El Sasle, helping to make a dream come true for close to 100 children and adults.

ABEX Proudly Supports Family and Children’s Services

christmas_ornamentABEX and its staff were proud to make another donation to Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region before Christmas holidays.

Last year, with ABEX’s and other donors’ help, Family and Children’s Services was able to provide special holiday support for over 700 families and youth in need in the Region through the Adopt-A-Family/Adopt-A-Youth Holiday program.

In addition, over 250 families and youth benefited from the generous contributions to the Emergency Support fund.  What a fantastic demonstration of the spirit of the season!  As Waterloo Region continues to have a persistent poverty rate of 10-11%, it is hearth warming to know that our support truly makes a difference for the children, youth and families in the region!

Talkin’ Turkey with ABEX!

Turkey DriveEvery family should have a Christmas dinner!

Like you, my colleagues and I in the Kitchener Conestoga Rotary Club (KCRC) believe every family should have a special Christmas dinner, including a turkey.  With the generosity of local businesses and our community, KCRC’s Turkey Drive has raised over $1,200,000 in support of House of Friendship’s Christmas Hamper Program, which provides a gift of food to families in need at Christmas-time.

What is the need in our community?

Here are the facts for the 2013 Turkey Drive.   We need to raise a minimum of $300,000 in the next four weeks to:

  • purchase 3,700 turkeys
  • supply food products for 4,250 hampers
  • recruit 600 volunteers to pack, deliver and distribute the turkeys and hampers
  • help make Christmas just a little better for over 12,000 in our community

What will that cost?

KCRC’s 2013 Turkey Drive goal is $300,000. We know this is a big goal, but we believe if we all pitch in a little, we will reach this goal, and more importantly reach thousands of local families.  Each donation of $100 will feed a family of four (including a hamper and turkey).  For as little as a donation of $25.00, you can sponsor a turkey (all donations over $20 will receive a charitable tax receipt).  How many families will you help feed? How many turkeys can you sponsor?

How can YOU talk turkey?

Give to the Turkey Drive.  Donate securely online at www.turkeydrive.ca or make your cheque payable to KCRC Turkey Drive and mail to:
